The Zonta Club of Washington, DC was formed in 1922 as the seventeenth Zonta club. Our first president was Edith C. Salisbury. The club meets twice a month, on the first Wednesday for dinner and on the second Monday for the board meeting. In August, the club meets only for a social event in a weekend. As of the middle of January, the club has 94 members.
Every year our members come together for service and to raise funds for our service projects and scholarships. Service projects such as filling gift bags for women in shelters and children in foster homes, sponsoring a reading contest and donation of books to Stanton School in Annacostia, distribution of Good Bears, donation of money to women's shelters, donation of cloth to Suited for Change, keep us busy all year.
Fundraising activities such a Theater Party, Art Auction or Restaurant Dinner are always fun and gives us an opportunity for fellowship. Since a long time ago, in lieu of sending Holiday cards to each other at the end of the year, the members donate generous amounts to our Holiday Card fundraiser.
The Zonta Scholarship fund provides grants to women attending undergraduate studies in universities in Washington, DC. The club also awards scholarships to female medical students based on criteria set up by the Trust established by Edith Seville Coale, a deceased member.
You can learn more about our club by exploring the pages of this site.
By Marta Calderon, Past-President, Zonta Club of Washington.
